Celebrating the life of the late Archbishop HurleyThe mother church of our Archdiocese - Emmanuel Cathedral – greets thousands of people as they enter Durban.
When the Cathedral was built in 1904 a three storey parish school was erected next to it. When the school moved the building became a parish centre - providing space for religious education classes and night school; for meetings and social events; as well as accommodation - most recently for refugee pastoral care.
The old building is now to be refurbished as the Denis Hurley Centre - and once complete will provide:
- A 24/7 outreach to refugees; street people; people living with HIV/AIDS; and others in distress.
- Education and skills training as well as a venue for gatherings.
- Facilities for community building events.
- A resource centre.
- A coffee shop and catering facilities.
In February of this year a major fundraising drive was launched by Cardinal Wilfrid Napier OFM to get the project off the ground. If you would like to contribute to the Centre please click here. We also ask for your prayers and encouragement to help the centre go on to be a significant outreach centre in memory of a beloved Archbishop.
