Asking for your understanding We’ve run into a problem which really saddens us. On more than one occasion mission friends have sent large containers of clothing to be shared out to men women and children in greatest need in our rural parishes.
What wonderful generosity! And we were delighted – until we tried to take delivery. Because of certain trade agreements and customs regulations in South Africa bulk clothing of any kind is subject to extremely high payment of duties. We just didn’t have the money to release the shipment. With heavy hearts we had to return what would have been a godsend to so many poor people. We do apologise for this situation which is beyond our control. Even other items come under scrutiny – and then there’s the high cost of postage or shipping. Without seeming to be ungrateful or ungracious - on reflection in future you may want to rather consider sending the monetary value instead. We promise to spend it wisely and to help the people you have in mind. What really counts is the blessing of your generous intent.
